Description
The red wolf is twice as big as a coyote and about half the size of a gray wolf. Adult females average 52 pounds and adult males weight about 61 pounds. . Red wolves have tall, pointed ears and long legs with big feet. A distint feature of them is that they have white around their muzzle area.
Habitat
In the past the Red Wolves have been known to live around the areas of Texas and Louisiana. Today though there are very few of them remaining in those regions. Due to the fact that they were trapped and killed to the point of near extinction, but thanks to reintroduction projects by professional biologists they are now also living in South Carolina and North Carolina. and are doing very well in those areas. Unfortunatly the reintroduction took quite awhile and the red wolves began to breed with coyotes, so pure red wolves have been announced extinict.
Reproduction
The Red Wolf is considered to be mature between 22 and 24 months of age Only the lead male and female of a pack that will reproduce. This activity takes place from January to March. The young pups are born a ouple of months later. A mother wolf can have from three pups to twelve.
These young are born in a den but instead of later emerging with them, the mother will continue to move them around to other dens for several months, this helps to prevent the scent from becoming too strong and attracting other wolf packs that may also be predators to the young.
Before they are a couple of years old they will often leave the pack they were born into. Females tend to have an easier time being accepted into another pack. While the males often have to find their own territory and look for a single female that they can start a pack with.
